Figma collab seat vs full seat: what each seat costs and who needs which

A Collab seat is Figma's seat for people who contribute without designing. Figma's own wording is that it includes full access to FigJam, Figma Slides and Figma Buzz, and gives users view and comment access in Figma Design files, with no access to Dev Mode beyond basic inspection. It costs $3 per person per month on the Professional plan billed annually, and $5 on both Organization and Enterprise.

The practical translation: a Collab seat holder can run a whole workshop. They can create FigJam boards, write on them, build and present a Slides deck, and leave comments on any Design file the team shares with them. They cannot open a Design file and move a rectangle. For a product manager, a marketer, a founder or an executive sponsor, that is the entire job, which is why the seat exists.

One line separates them: editing Figma Design. A Full seat opens every Figma product, including Figma Design, Figma Make, Figma Draw, Figma Sites, Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides and Buzz. A Collab seat opens the collaboration products in full and stops at view and comment inside Design files.

The price difference is not subtle, and it gets less subtle as you move up the plans. On Professional it is $3 against $16, a little over 5x. On Organization it is $5 against $55, which is 11x. On Enterprise it is $5 against $90, which is 18x. A 40-person company where 25 people never open a Design file is spending $16,500 a year on Organization Full seats where $1,500 would do, and the difference buys nothing those 25 people can use.

Two smaller differences are worth knowing before you decide. AI credits are not equal: a Full seat carries 3,000 a month on Professional, 3,500 on Organization and 4,250 on Enterprise, while Collab and Dev seats get 500 on every plan. And some newer products are Full-seat only. Figma states that the Motion beta and the Sites beta are available on Full seats, while the Buzz beta is available on all seats.

No. Every paid Figma seat includes full FigJam editing, and so does the free Starter plan. FigJam has never had a separate price; it rides on whatever Figma seat a person already holds. That is the single most useful fact in Figma's pricing, because it means the cheapest fully capable whiteboard seat in the category is $3 a month, provided your company is already on Figma.

It also means a common procurement instinct is wrong. Teams often buy Full seats for workshop participants because they assume the whiteboard sits behind the design tool. It does not. If the only thing a person does in Figma is join a FigJam board, a $3 Collab seat gives them exactly the same FigJam they would get on a $16 seat. Only in a limited form. Figma's help documentation says a Collab seat has no access to Dev Mode and gets basic inspection only. A Dev seat, at $12 on Professional, $25 on Organization and $35 on Enterprise, gets full Dev Mode along with full FigJam, Slides and Buzz.

This is the mistake that shows up repeatedly in Figma's own community forum, in threads with titles like collaboration seat limitations after upgrade and misleading collab seat limitations. An engineer gets moved to a Collab seat to save $9 a month, then finds the advanced inspection that handoff depends on is gone. Save the $9 on stakeholders, not on the people doing implementation work.

Seat type is an administrator setting, changed from the admin area rather than by the person holding it. The billing rule that catches people out is about availability: if the seat type you are moving someone to is already unassigned and paid for, the change costs nothing extra, and if it is not, you are buying a new seat.

What that means in practice is that a mid-cycle downgrade does not hand you an instant refund. It frees a Full seat that you stop paying for at renewal. So the audit is worth doing before you renew, not after. Pull the member list, mark everyone who has not edited a Design file in ninety days, and move that group to Collab in one pass rather than one person at a time.

No, and this is the cheapest fact on the page. Figma states plainly that if you are on a paid plan, you can let others view and comment on your files without purchasing extra seats. There is a View seat at $0 that covers view and comment access in Figma Design, Figma Slides and FigJam.

So the seat ladder has four rungs and the bottom one is free. Someone who only reads and reacts costs nothing. Someone who runs workshops, builds decks and comments costs $3. Someone who inspects and implements costs $12. Someone who designs costs $16. Most companies we see buying Figma have collapsed those four into one, and the invoice reflects it.

Seat planning tells you what each person is allowed to open. It does not tell you whether the board will have anything good on it. FigJam on a Collab seat is a genuinely excellent surface, and a surface holds exactly what the room brings to it. If the five people in the session are tired, junior, or anchored on the first thing the loudest person said, a $3 seat and a $90 seat produce the same wall.
