Brainstormer

An honest comparison

Stormboard alternative that generates the ideas too

Looking for a Stormboard alternative? Stormboard is a serious sticky-note workspace with strong templates and exports, built for organizations that run structured sessions. It still needs a room full of people to supply the ideas. Brainstormer supplies them: dozens of genuinely different directions per challenge, run through real frameworks, clustered and scored into one pick.

◇ The short version

Keep Stormboard if you run facilitated sessions and need polished reports exported to Word, Excel or PowerPoint afterward. Choose Brainstormer when you need the ideas themselves, and a decision, without assembling a room.

What Stormboard is genuinely better at

Stormboard has a real specialty and it is worth naming: it turns a messy session into a document. The structured templates keep a large group on the rails, and the exports produce something a program manager can actually circulate, in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, which is exactly what an enterprise workshop needs on the Monday after. If your organization runs sanctioned innovation sessions with dozens of participants and a reporting obligation, Stormboard is built for you and it does that job well.

Notice the assumption underneath, though. The value arrives after a room has been assembled, briefed and facilitated. Take away the participants and the templates are empty grids. Most ideas are not needed at the next quarterly workshop; they are needed on a Tuesday, by one person, before a deadline. That is the case an online brainstorming tool built around the AI, not the room, is designed for.

The ideas have to come from somewhere

Every sticky-note tool shares the same quiet dependency: someone has to write on the stickies. Stormboard organizes contributions beautifully and generates none of them. If the six people in the session are tired, junior, or anchored on the first idea the loudest person said, the board faithfully records exactly that.

Brainstormer removes the dependency. Type the challenge and two dozen genuinely different directions land on the wall in the first thirty seconds, each tagged with the angle that produced it, so nobody starts from a blank grid and nobody anchors on the first voice in the room. Add your own seeds and yes-and mode builds on them rather than filing them next to everything else. Then flip the wall through SCAMPER or Six Thinking Hats to force angles the group would not have reached on its own.

A report is not a decision

The Stormboard export is genuinely useful, and it is still a record of what a room said. Somebody has to read it, group the overlapping ideas, weigh what is worth doing, and defend a choice. In practice that step gets postponed, and the beautifully exported deck becomes a document nobody acts on.

Brainstormer collapses the gap. Affinity clustering names the themes, every idea gets an impact against effort score, and one winner is lifted out with its reasoning spelled out in sentences a stakeholder can argue with. What you circulate afterward is a shortlist and a recommendation, not a transcript of a workshop. The mechanics of the scoring step are on the idea prioritization page.

Which one fits your organization

If your brainstorming is an event, budgeted, scheduled, attended and reported on, Stormboard fits that shape and the free personal tier makes it easy to try. As of July 2026 its Business plan runs around $10 per person per month, with Enterprise pricing on request.

If your brainstorming is a daily act of work rather than an event, the shape is different, and so is the price. Brainstormer is $16 a month for Solo, $39 for Pro, and $99 for a five-seat Team plan that includes shared walls, async dot-voting and facilitator mode for the sessions that genuinely deserve to stay live. Questions

Is Brainstormer a full Stormboard replacement?

For generating ideas and reaching a decision, yes. For running large facilitated enterprise sessions that must export into formal Word or PowerPoint reports, Stormboard remains the stronger fit. Some organizations keep it for sanctioned workshops and use Brainstormer for everyday ideation.

Can Brainstormer work without gathering a group?

Yes, that is the default. A complete solo brainstorm takes minutes: the wall generates two dozen directions, you flip them through frameworks, add your own, then cluster and score. Team features exist on the $99 plan when you want colleagues on the same wall.

How much does Stormboard cost compared to Brainstormer?

As of July 2026 Stormboard offers a free personal tier and a Business plan around $10 per person per month, with Enterprise pricing on request. Brainstormer is $16 Solo, $39 Pro and $99 for a five-seat Team. Verify current pricing on both sites before you buy.

Do we lose the export and reporting we rely on?

You get a different artifact. Brainstormer exports to Markdown, PNG and CSV, and what it exports is the outcome: named clusters, a scored shortlist and the picked winner with reasons. If your compliance process specifically requires formatted Word or PowerPoint deliverables, keep Stormboard for those sessions.
