Mural brainstorming template and Mural mind map: what mind maps in Mural actually do

A mind map in Mural is a central topic with branches of connected sticky notes and shapes, built on the same infinite canvas as every other mural. You can start from one of Mural's mind map templates or draw one from scratch with connectors. On Team+ and above, Mural AI can also add related nodes for you rather than making you type every branch.

Two details matter when you are choosing a tool for this. First, the map lives on a general whiteboard, so it does not reflow itself the way a dedicated mind mapping app does: when a branch gets long, moving things so the map stays readable is your job. Second, the map is only as good as the thinking behind it, which is why the generation question below is the one worth answering before you pick a plan.

Yes. Mural's Generate Ideas action starts from a central concept and automatically adds related nodes, you can expand any single node for more suggestions, and you can refine the prompt to steer what comes back. Alongside it Mural AI includes Cluster by topic, Summarize, Classify, Rewrite, Translate, Diagram and an AI chat. All of it sits on Team+, Business and Enterprise member plans, not on Free.

That is worth stating plainly because a lot of comparison pages, including an older version of ours, claimed Mural only gives you empty branches to type into. It does not, and buying decisions made on that claim would be wrong. If your objection to Mural was "it will not help me think," the accurate version is narrower: it will help you widen one node at a time, on a canvas you still lay out.

The real difference is the shape of the help. Generate Ideas expands the node you point at, which is excellent once you already know your branches. A dedicated AI mind map generator proposes the branches themselves from a single challenge, which is what you actually need at the start of a problem, before you know what the top-level directions are.

The library is large enough to be its own decision, so here is the short routing. Conducting a brainstorm is the safest default for a group: it opens with a solo brainstorm space so people write silently before they see each other, which is the single most effective guard against the loudest person in the room setting the direction. Brainstorming grid suits a timed round such as 6-3-5, where six people write three ideas in five minutes and pass. Brainstorm many ideas is the volume-first option when the problem is fuzzy.

On the mapping side, Mind map is the classic central-topic layout, Mind map brainstorm merges the map with sticky-note divergence, and Rapid mind mapping is the time-boxed version for a short session. Whichever you open, the preparation is the same. Write the challenge as a question before anyone joins, decide the time box, and decide in advance how you will pick. What the free plan limits is the canvas count and the AI: you keep three murals editable at a time, unlimited members and visitors get view-only rights, and Mural AI is not included at all.

A template is a labeled empty space. It tells the room where to put ideas. It has no opinion about whether the ideas are any good, whether there are enough of them, or which one you should build on Monday.

Open a SCAMPER template and you still have to know what "substitute" means for your product, then write all seven columns yourself. Open the same method in a tool that runs it and the seven operations are applied to your challenge automatically, each idea filed under the letter it came from. The gap that stays open on any canvas is the end of the session. Sticky notes accumulate, the hour runs out, someone photographs the board, and the decision moves to a follow-up that never gets booked. Use a Mural mind map template when the structure is already known and the map is a communication artifact: an org of workstreams, a taxonomy, a plan you need a client to read in a shared link. Hand-built maps on a canvas are good at that, and Mural's collaboration and comment tooling is genuinely strong for review.

Use a generated map when the structure is the thing you do not have yet. Timers, private mode, structured voting sessions and the ability to pull everyone's viewport to the same spot are real tools that make a live session run to time, and the template library saves genuine preparation hours. Think harder if nobody facilitates. Mural charges per member across the workspace, so equipping two facilitators means paying for ten seats, and most of those people open a board twice a quarter.
