The best brainstorming software for an engineering team is whichever tool argues back. Engineering teams do not usually lack ideas and they do not lack a place to write them down; they have docs, RFCs, decision records and a ticket tracker already. What they lack is a cheap way to pressure-test the first plausible design before it becomes a quarter of committed work. That is a different product from a whiteboard, and it costs less.

Worth being blunt about the categories before anyone raises a purchase request. A canvas (Miro, Mural, FigJam, Lucidspark, or the whiteboard inside your meeting platform) captures and arranges what a room produces. A generative tool produces the options a room reacts to. An AI meeting assistant records the meeting you already had. Three different failures, three different price tags, and an engineering org that buys the wrong one usually concludes its people are the problem.

Engineering teams already have capture, which is why a canvas underdelivers

Most tooling sold as brainstorming software solves capture: get the thoughts out of people's heads and onto a shared surface where they persist. That is a genuine problem for a marketing team working off a slide deck and a group chat. It is largely a solved problem in engineering. You already write design docs. You already have a decision record format, or you have opinions about why you should. Discussion threads persist, diagrams live next to the code, and every idea eventually becomes a ticket with an owner.

So when an engineering team buys a canvas, the honest outcome is usually a nicer version of something it had. Boards fill up during the kickoff, get screenshotted into the design doc, and go stale. That is not a knock on Miro or Mural, both of which are good at what they do, and if your team draws a lot of system diagrams a canvas earns its seat on the diagramming alone. It is a knock on the diagnosis. Buying capture when you already have capture is how a tool ends up unused by month three.

The real failure: the first plausible design wins

Here is the mechanic, and it is not a shortage of creativity. In a design discussion, the first technically credible proposal sets the frame, and everything after it gets measured against that proposal rather than against the problem. If the person who voiced it is the most senior engineer in the room, the frame hardens faster, because disagreeing now costs social capital. Twenty minutes in, the team is optimizing a solution nobody stress-tested, and the alternatives that were never spoken are not in the design doc, so they are not in the record either.

Engineers know this and have built rituals against it: RFCs circulated for written comment before a decision, decision records that force you to list the options you rejected and why, pre-mortems that ask what breaks. Those rituals work. Their cost is calendar time and a reviewer with the energy to be unpopular, and both are in short supply in the week you actually need them. What is the best brainstorming tool for software engineering teams?

Match the tool to the failure. If sessions produce good ideas that get lost, buy a canvas and standardize where boards live. If meetings run long and nobody writes the decision down, an AI meeting assistant is the cheaper fix. If the team commits to the first credible design and discovers the tradeoff in code review, you need something that generates real alternatives and names the risk in each, which is what a generative tool does and what neither of the other two attempts.

The fourth answer is nothing. A rotating devil's advocate role and a written-first RFC round costs zero dollars and fixes a surprising share of this. Try that before you spend, because a tool that duplicates a ritual you already run well is money out the door.

The four engineering rituals where it actually matters

Architecture decisions. This is where anchoring is most expensive, because the cost of being wrong is measured in migrations. What helps is a wide set of genuinely different approaches with the tradeoffs attached before anyone opens a diagramming tool, so the decision record has real rejected options in it rather than two strawmen. Once the approach is settled the bottleneck moves to implementation, which is its own tooling category: an autonomous coding agent that plans a task and works through it is solving a different half of the problem than anything on this page.

Incident postmortems. The trap is stopping at the first root cause that explains the symptom. A blameless postmortem needs contributing factors nobody has thought of yet, including the organizational ones, and it needs somebody willing to say the on-call rotation is the actual problem.

Tech debt prioritization. Everyone has a list; nobody has an agreed order. The useful work is generating the arguments for and against paying down each item, from the perspectives that will actually be in the room when the roadmap gets cut: the engineer, the customer, the skeptic who has watched three refactors stall. Roadmap and scoping. Ways to cut a feature in half, ways to ship a thin version first, ways to buy instead of build. This is a range problem and it is the one where teams most often produce three variants of the same plan.

Does Microsoft Copilot or Teams Facilitator cover this?

Not the generation half, and it is worth knowing before the license renewal. Facilitator is Microsoft's meeting agent, bundled with a Copilot license rather than sold separately, and its documented job is to chair: agenda, topic timers with midway and wrap-up reminders, a collaborative note everyone can edit, summaries and action items. It does not produce options and Microsoft does not claim it does. It also does not work in one-to-one chats, group chats or any meeting with an external guest, and it needs a Teams license, a Copilot license and a tenant-wide Loop setting all lined up. The reason that matters for an engineering budget is scale. Copilot is $30 per user per month paid yearly on the enterprise SKU, $18 on Copilot Business. For a twelve-person team that is roughly $4,320 a year at the enterprise rate, and it buys you a better record of the meeting rather than better options in it. What about just asking ChatGPT or Claude?

It works, and for one engineer thinking alone it is often enough. The limitation is structural rather than about model quality. One model asked once returns one voice, and that voice is agreeable by default. Ask it for options on a caching strategy and you get a competent list that reads as though a single thoughtful person wrote it, which is exactly the failure mode you were trying to escape. Getting genuine disagreement out of a chatbot means running several deliberately opposed prompts yourself and keeping track of the outputs, and that is a discipline most teams sustain for about two weeks. How much should an engineering team budget?

Three honest tiers. Zero dollars gets you a written-first RFC round and a rotating skeptic, and you should exhaust that first. Somewhere between $8 and $20 per engineer per month gets a canvas, which is the right buy if diagramming and persistent boards are the gap. Between $16 and $99 for the account, not per seat, gets a generative tool aimed at the range problem, which is the only one of the three that changes what goes into the design doc rather than where it is stored.

The number that should give a manager pause is the per-seat AI platform license at $30 a month, because it scales with headcount and it solves the meeting-record problem, which for most engineering teams is not the problem. Price the failure before you price the tool.
