Run idea campaigns that end in a decision

Innovation challenge software for campaigns with a question and a deadline

Innovation challenge software runs time boxed idea campaigns around one business question. In Brainstormer each challenge has a question, a description, a deadline and an open or closed status; employees submit ideas, AI scores them against your strategic goals, and the challenge ends with a board report.

What an innovation challenge is and why it beats an open idea box

An innovation challenge is a campaign with a single question, a defined audience and an end date. Instead of asking for any idea on any topic, you ask everyone to work on one problem the business actually needs solved. Because every idea answers the same question, they can be compared, scored and ranked in a way an open box never allows.

Deadlines change behavior. A challenge that closes on the last Friday of the month gets focused attention and a clear moment to decide. An always open channel slowly fills with repeats and loses urgency. Most companies that run ideas well use both: a standing suggestion box for everyday improvements and a rhythm of challenges for the questions leadership cares about.

In Brainstormer a challenge is the core object. It has a question, a description, a deadline and a status of open or closed, and every idea, score, vote and stage change is attached to it.

Weak and strong innovation challenge questions
Weak questionWhy it failsStronger challenge question
Any ideas to improve customer service? No outcome and no limit, so answers cannot be comparedHow could customers solve most billing questions without opening a support ticket?
How can we be more innovative?Asks for a mindset, not a changeWhich new service could we offer existing clients within six months, using the team we have?
Ideas for saving moneyInvites cuts to other people's budgetsHow could we cut the time from order to invoice by a third?
What should we do about onboarding? Not clear who it affects or what good looks likeHow could we cut customer onboarding time in half?

How to write a challenge question people can answer

Start from a result the business wants, then phrase it as "How could we" plus a measurable change. "How could we cut customer onboarding time in half?" works because it names the outcome, implies a baseline, and leaves the method open. Avoid questions that ask for a mindset ("How can we be more innovative?") or that invite people to cut someone else's budget.

Use the description to set the frame. Say who is affected, which constraints are fixed, what has already been tried, and what a strong answer would include. Two or three short paragraphs are enough. If the question is strategic and you want a wider range before opening it to everyone, run the AI workshop first and send its ideas into the challenge as a starting set.

Link the challenge to your strategic goals. On Business and Enterprise, your workspace holds three to six goals with weights, and every idea in the challenge is scored for strategic fit against them. That keeps the ranking tied to what the company decided matters, not to who shouted loudest. The innovation management software page explains how those weighted goals work across a portfolio.

Running several challenges and what the plan limits mean

A realistic rhythm is one or two challenges a quarter per business area, each open for two to six weeks. That gives reviewers time to decide before the next campaign starts and shows employees that every challenge ends with an outcome.

Team allows 3 open challenges at a time, which fits a single department or a company running a standing challenge plus two themed ones. Closed challenges do not count toward the limit, so you can run as many campaigns over the year as you like, three at once. Business and Enterprise remove the limit and allow unlimited challenges, which suits companies where several departments run their own campaigns in parallel.

Team is $149 a month billed yearly or $298 month to month for up to 25 members. Business is $399 a month billed yearly for up to 150 members, and Enterprise is $999 a month billed yearly for up to 1,000. You can see pricing for everything included in each plan.

Closing a challenge with a board report

A challenge is only finished when someone decides what happens to the best ideas. When a challenge closes, AI has already expanded each idea, scored it on impact, cost, risk and strategic fit from 1 to 10, calculated a weighted total with a written rationale, merged duplicates and grouped ideas into themes. Reviewers then move ideas through shortlisted, approved or rejected, with a note on every decision.

The board report, available on Business and Enterprise, pulls this together per challenge: the ranking, the themes, how many ideas sit at each stage, and a recommendation. You can print it to PDF from the browser, copy it as Markdown, or export CSV for your own analysis. It is the document you bring to the leadership meeting instead of a slide someone assembled by hand.

Approved ideas continue into in progress and implemented, and the audit trail keeps the record of who decided what and when. For the scoring step in detail, see idea prioritization, or read how it works end to end.

Questions

What is innovation challenge software?

Software for running time boxed idea campaigns around one question. It collects ideas against that question, helps evaluate them, and ends the campaign with a decision and a report, instead of leaving ideas in an open inbox.

How long should an innovation challenge run?

Two to six weeks works for most business questions. Long enough for people to think and discuss, short enough to keep urgency and reach a decision while the topic still matters.

How many challenges can we run at once?

Team allows 3 open challenges at a time. Business and Enterprise allow unlimited challenges. Closed challenges never count toward the limit.

How are ideas in a challenge evaluated?

AI scores each idea on impact, cost, risk and strategic fit from 1 to 10 and calculates a weighted total based on your company goals, with a written rationale. Members can vote, and reviewers make the final decision through the pipeline stages.

Can we try a challenge before paying?

Yes. The homepage has a demo challenge with AI generated ideas that works without an account. Running your own challenges requires a workspace on one of the three paid plans.
